Some of you may know me as Ask Renee, writer of green living advice full of eye rolling puns and random fun facts. I enjoy writing and take pride in carrying on my dad and uncle’s tradition of ridiculous plays on words. So, I sat down to write a clever PUP blog entry about Earth Day and, as sometimes happens, I had total writers block.
I could write about global warming, but that’s such a heated topic. I considered just recycling content from my column. Or maybe I could share how much I love riding mass transit through the wind farms of Northwest Indiana – I’m a big fan.
Seriously though, I kept reading and re-reading the Earth Day Network home page, waiting for some smarty pants lead to pop in my head. But all I really kept thinking was how much this 46-year-old global movement that works with more than 50,000 partners in 196 countries and that inspires more than a billion people to participate in Earth Day activities, well, their voice sounds an awful lot like PUP!
From the Earth Day Network home page:
The movement continues.
We are now entering the 46th year of a movement that continues to inspire, challenge ideas, ignite passion, and motivate people to action.
In 1970, the year of our first Earth Day, the movement gave voice to an emerging consciousness, channeling human energy toward environmental issues. Forty-six years later, we continue to lead with groundbreaking ideas and by the power of our example.
And so it begins. Today. Right here and right now. Earth Day is more than just a single day — April 22, 2016. It’s bigger than attending a rally and taking a stand.
This Earth Day and beyond, let’s make big stuff happen. Let’s plant 7.8 billion trees for the Earth. Let’s divest from fossil fuels and make cities 100% renewable. Let’s take the momentum from the Paris Climate Summit and build on it.
Let’s start now. And let’s not stop.
I think about everything that People for Urban Progress has accomplished since 2008 and I get really excited about where we’ll be when we’re celebrating 46 years. PUP is a movement and, if you’re reading this, you’re part of that movement.
In the spirit of Earth Day, let’s get really big stuff done for Indianapolis and for our planet.
Happy Earth Day!
